As someone not involved in the development of pillowfort but am a web developer, I think you should lower your expectations, but not for the reason you think.
Pillowfort is a baby. A newborn. A smol bab. If you were here during the early days of Tumblr, think of that.
Pillowfort simply cannot be the immediate solution to your woes. It needs to be nurtured and cared for to become a mature and happy adult.
If you want Pillowfort to work, they’ll need feedback, advice, bug reports, etc. This is a chance to make Pillowfort the Ao3 of Fanfiction.net. It’s not gonna happen overnight, you need to give it time and love and it’ll get there.
If you don’t want to pay money to get into the beta, that’s ok. It will be open to the public soon enough and you won’t have to pay a dime. Their financial model moving forward sounds good (a subscription fee for super extra features), but even an Ao3 model would work swell for them probably.
We’re living in an interesting time on the internet. Governments across the world are cracking down on content and yet community run websites are starting to thrive more and more.
Tumblr once upon a time was what Pillowfort is today, but this time, let’s make sure Pillowfort can stay independent from mega corporations.
yes this
most of the criticism i’ve seen of pf so far ultimately come back to this
is it an alright platform with a good community? yes. does it have a lot of potential? yes. does it have a lot of problems still being worked out? yes. are the staff open and responsive? absolutely. do i recommend it? yes, if you’re willing to live in a house while it’s being built.
but it’s not a ready-made replacement for tumblr. set your expectations accordingly.
I think the best piece of character design advice I ever received was actually from a band leadership camp I attended in june of 2017.
the speaker there gave lots of advice for leaders—obviously, it was a leadership camp—but his saying about personality flaws struck me as useful for writers too.
he said to us all “your curses are your blessings and your blessings are your curses” and went on to explain how because he was such a great speaker, it made him a terrible listener. he could give speeches for hours on end and inspire thousands of people, but as soon as someone wanted to talk to him one on one or vent to him, he struggled with it.
he had us write down our greatest weakness and relate it to our biggest strength (mine being that I am far too emotional, but I’m gentle with others because I can understand their emotions), and the whole time people are sharing theirs, my mind was running wild with all my characters and their flaws.
previously, I had added flaws as an after thought, as in “this character seems too perfect. how can I make them not-like-that?” but that’s not how people or personalities work. for every human alive, their flaws and their strengths are directly related to each other. you can’t have one without the other.
is your character strong-willed? that can easily turn into stubbornness. is your character compassionate? maybe they give too many chances. are they loyal? then they’ll destroy the world for the people they love.
it works the other way around too: maybe your villain only hates the protagonist’s people because they love their own and just have a twisted sense of how to protect them. maybe your antagonist is arrogant, but they’ll be confident in everything they do.
tl;dr “your curses are your blessings, and your blessings are your curses” there is no such thing as a character flaw, just a strength that has been stretched too far.
This is such a fabulous flip side of what I’ve always known about villians. That their biggest weakness is that they always assume their own motivations are the motives of others.
I know some people might not care about this. I know some people think this is to complicated. And I know some people think this won’t affect them. But here’s the thing, IT WILL definantly effect you no matter where you live. It will effect you tumblr user, you reddit users, and you watching youtube.
If this law gets passed then it’s gonna inspire the rest of the world. It was just like how in the USA.
The video is barley sixteen minutes and less if you skip ahead.
IT IS THE TRANSLATED AND SIMPLE VERSION OF ARTICLE 13’S IMPLICATIONS

As you may have heard tumblr recently ‘killed the links’, making it so that any post that has any link on it (even if it links to tumblr posts or tags) will not show up in the /search/ function.
Well, I’ve got some GOOD NEWS for you. The /tagged/ function still works just fine. The bad news is the tumblr mobile app ONLY uses the /search/ function. The GOOD NEWS is the /tagged/ function has always displayed 33% more content than the /search/ function. Yup, you heard that right. If you were only using the mobile app, you were already missing out on TONS of content.
TAGGED VS SEARCH
/tagged/ function = tumblr.com/tagged/tag name
This is what most people refer to by ‘looking in the tag’. It only populates posts that have the tag name within the first 5 tags. If you’re posting alot, it will oftentimes only show your last 3 posts in a given tag to prevent you from spamming it. It’s very accurate.
/search/ function = tumblr.com/search/word
This searches all words in a given post, including the first 20 tags and the entire text of the post itself. The mobile app only uses the /search/ function and is missing 33% of what is available in the /tagged/ function. So if you only use the mobile app, you are literally missing 1/3 of what the fandom is posting. This is why I only use the more accurate /tagged/ function. Unfortunately, this is also referred to as ‘looking in the tag’ when it is not actually looking in the tag but ‘looking in the word search’.
I’ve actually avoided the /search/ function for years because of these problems. I only use the /tagged/ function but it is a bit harder to use on a mobile browser which is why I only look in the tags using my desktop computer. At least now you can still FIND all the content you might have missed.
society needs shame. if you dont embarrass weird greasy kids in high school they turn into adults who walk their girlfriends around on dog leashes in the mall
Nothing wrong with that as long as there’s Mutual consent
did you know that bystanders literally do not consent to being a part of public sexual displays
being shamed fucking sucks, but it’s necessary for folks to know there’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed
I’m saying this as somebody who nearly went off the deep end with my embarrassing weaboo-ness in middle school. I thank God every day that I was given a rude awakening that literally nobody could relate to me because of my wilful hyperfixation and lack of attempts to expand my horizons
…not having friends cause you were the weird weaboo kid is not the same as OP
saying that bullying is good. ‘greasy kids’ could literally be poor kids whose familys cant afford soap. Or just teens thats hormones make them greasy. Like normal.
And the weird hyper fixation phase is a normal part of growing up. Heres how it goes: Middleschool thru Highschool: The hyperfixation phase (this phase is lengthened slightly into college if they havent joined the work force.) This is an important phase where children start to try and build an identity for themselves.
Early to mid 20s: The backlash phase. Angry at whatever the hyperfixation was and people that are still in that phase due to personal shame of ‘having been that’. Intense need to prove that they are better then that and a ‘real adult’
Late 20s early 30s: Moved past the anger and realize its just kids being kids and its best to leave them alone to grow up. May have nostalgia for the hyperfixation phase
Notice that most of tumblr tends to fall in between phase one and two, hence the intense arguments on this site. Fighting with the hyperfixation phase people doesnt fix it, them getting out in the real world with jobs will correct the issue on its own.
And as far as actual gross people with no boundaries. Those people wont change no matter how much you try and ‘shame’ them. Chances are your reaction just turns them on more. They know damn well where the boundaries are, they are just terrible and dont care.
I see what you’re getting at here, but… the point isn’t that bullying is good. bullying is really fucking bad and can leave some serious trauma. (hello, I’ve had some experience with that and boy can I talk about it, but we’re not here for that)
the point is that people who blatantly ignore societal standards and are sheltered enough from them to avoid them entirely need to be put into situations where those standards are staring them in the face. they need to be confronted with “hey, picking my nose and eating it isn’t normal.” or “hey, talking incessantly about my anime waifu and running around with cat ears on isn’t gonna score me any social points.” or “hmm, I’m noticing that choosing not to shower – not because of any financial situation but because of personal choice – is making people avoid me.”
people need shame. they need to be embarrassed from time to time. literally EVERYBODY needs to be taken down a notch now and then.
yeah, there are absolutely phases that people will naturally grow out of… but it’s not as though their age suddenly flips a switch. As people get older, they have more experiences, and it’s these experiences that cause them to grow… and it’s in these experiences that they will come face to face with necessary shame.
nobody’s saying people need to be tarred, feathered, and run out of town in front of a laughing crowd. what we’re saying is that people need to be faced with the reality that what’s in their brains isn’t always gonna agree with what’s in the real world, and if they want to be accepted by the real world, something’s gotta give.
There’s been a lot of posts going around lately about Paypal and their policy on fees, and I’ve seen a lot of people suggesting you move to invoices. What you might not realise unless you have a closer look at these payments once you receive them, is that Paypal is expecting you to ship an item. This remains the same regardless of whether you use the default form, the ‘services’ form and charge by the hour, and whether you put 0.00 in the postage section.
After a call to customer service this morning, I have confirmed there is actually no option on invoices for a seller to indicate that postage is not required if you are invoicing from the main paypal website (ie. you don’t do paypal checkout through your website, there may be a work around if you have a purchase button on your website, which isn’t entirely practical for commissions as prices can often vary and most do payments through the site directly). This means that if you don’t provide shipping / tracking information on that payment, Paypal may freeze the funds and/or your account.
Apparently the way to avoid this is to include in the notes section of the invoice that the invoice is for goods and services, and that no shipping is required.
They also said that the buyer should indicate in the notes when they pay that they have received the goods/service, however this is going to cause issues with commissions as most are either paid upfront or partway through.
If anyone has any further solution to this, reblog and or message me, but otherwise this has been a PSA about Paypal invoicing. Seller beware.
Guys the struggle is real and I am learning this now. Make sure you write that your goods are digital in your invoices so your account does not freeze.
The way I manage my invoices isn’t just to specify under the note,
But also to choose this option when the payment has been sent and the commission has been completed
*this is especially important: these days on Tumblr there’s a wonderful atmosphere of being able to talk openly about your mental illness or your struggle. And that’s great! But there’s a difference between sharing in order to help yourself and other people and sharing just because you have no other coping mechanisms. As much as you’re able, try to work on developing a different outlet. People aren’t qualified to be your therapist because they’re nice to you a couple of times. Please remember that they have lives too, and their job is not to make you feel better or pity you, no matter how difficult your life is.
And last but not least:
But…
I really don’t have a way to better this.
Your interests are your own. I can’t advise anyone to change their interests to fit in with a certain group of people – that’s stupid, and actually quite damaging to your sense of self.
Instead, I would recommend that, maybe if you feel like your topics of conversation are falling flat with this group of people, you move on to other, greener pastures. There are bound to be places where your ideas mesh better with an audience.
And of course – try to be considerate about what you say and how you say it.
Sometimes, what might seem like a harmless comment to you might be a very discomforting thought to another person. I recently had a conversation on a forum with a guy who was telling me that his headcanon was that Pearl (from SU) would soon get a male love interest who loved mechanics and weapons next, and that would be her best arc, because she would finally get a ‘healthy’ love interest.
His intentions were good, but he was entirely unaware of how cringey this kind of thing was to a bunch of (probably queer) people, who have spent their entire lives being told that the only ‘good’ character development for them would be to get a ‘male love interest’. No one wanted to be the jerk to say “fuck off, we don’t want that to happen” but everyone was answering him in a flat way, trying to discourage the discussion further. Instead of picking up on the hint, he bulldozed on, thinking he was having a ‘lively conversation’ which was, in fact, in its late stages of death.
I know I’ll probably get a few messages to this saying: What about people on the Autistic Spectrum? Sometimes, people can’t pick up social cues or ‘hints’. And if that’s the case, it’s incredibly difficult to understand why you’re not having any luck communicating despite your best efforts.
I feel that on a person level, please believe me. I made this infograph for THAT VERY REASON. Because I WAS that awkward kid who didn’t pick up on hints well. In fact, I still have trouble talking to people. If any of you have had the misfortune of being my conversational partner, you’ll know that I tend to be overly blunt and come off as very unfriendly. It’s something that I, myself, am working on currently in order to grow into a better person. It’s a struggle in progress, but I am aiming towards the progress side, and I just wanted to help out others while I was at it.
Hey guys, let me show you a little something called @pillowfort-io.
Pillowfort is a blogging website that takes the best aspects of Tumblr, Twitter, and LiveJournal, smushes it together into the best social media platform you can find.
Pillowfort is organized by communities rather than tags, making it a breeze to find what you’re looking for, including people into the same stuff as you. Better still, within these communities you can make discussions. Want to talk about the brand new book from the series without giving spoilers to people who haven’t read it yet? Make a discussion.
Two words: Nested comments. If you are unfamiliar with what this means, look to AO3.
There’s a mutual counter on the side bar. Curious as to who you’re buds with? look no further than the left side of your screen.
This all sounds awesome, but don’t take my word for it. In the description of the Kickstarter there’s a link to a demo account. That’s right. A demo account. And If you like what you see, by donating $5 you can get an account key, and by donating more you can get some pretty snazzy merch.
If you can’t donate, at least reblog. Pillowfort needs all the recognition it can get so we can get it off the ground.
After crying my eyes out for the past hour, after realizing the situation I’m being put into, I’m literally forcing myself to write this. I’m struggling to ask for something I always thought I could avoid, and that’s needing help.
I’ve been living with my aunt and uncle for a couple years now, and I’m very grateful that they took me in after I graduated highschool, hell I’m also grateful to my othe uncle who let me sleep in his living room so I wouldn’t have to move to a different town with my mother. But my point is, my mother and her irresponsibility. She and my father are divorced, so my father has sent her child support for me and my sister. When I decided to continue school through college I needed the extended child support so I could afford going. Things recently have turn for the worse because my mother is having sticky fingers and not sending most of my money. My aunt and I for months now have been going to courts and lawyers to find a way to get the money sent differently, for now there’s nothing we can do unless my aunt signs off as my official guardian.
What my mother is doing to me is creating so much fucking stress for me by not sending me my child support. At this point I don’t have enough to go to school this year, or to even pay for my car that I need to get to work with. And Whatever is in my account gets sucked into my previous school loans. I’m currently training at my new job, and I won’t get more hours to earn me more money until that time is up, another month or so.
So I’m opening emergency commissions. I want to at least earn up to half of the tuition for just one semester at my college before getting the rest on a loan, that being $2,000′s Because i only work little hours I’ll be able to completely focus and dedicate my time on these commissions. Here is my chart.
