I assume you’re referring to the Underfell fangame-style sprites I’ve done, since this ask came from around that time (sorry for not getting to it sooner, just been busy with some other stuff).
Well first off, it’s best if you got permission from @underfellfangame. I’d imagine as long as you don’t plan on using them for future fangames, they’ll say yes.
The next step is scouting around for the sprites used in-game. This shouldn’t be too hard, since most of the sprites can either be screenshot-ed, or found on the official Tumblr.
After that, it all comes down to editing the character to the AU you’d like. Be aware, however, that some edits might be more challenging than others.
Here we have our original Frisk, along with two edits: one of IF!Frisk, and one of Classic Chara. The two characters look very different, but they both came from the same base. I recommend looking into what character or AU you think you might be capable of doing. There’s been some easy edits, and there have been hard edits.
Another thing to keep in mind is how the palette works for this certain style.
Each certain color of the character, for example, Frisk’s hair, usually consists of 4 colors that are either darker or lighter than the chosen color, along with a final color that functions as the “border” between either other colors or the background.
Not gonna get too much into shading, but you should at least recognize and decide how light or dark a color should be. Here, Frisk’s shirt is shown in three delicious varieties: light, dark, and in between.
I think I got everything. One last thing I should state, and this is important:
Don’t sprite any of the confirmed characters for Underfell.
That would include anyone in Undertale, Underfell, Underswap, Naturetale, or Nextale.
I’m saying this because it isn’t fair to the team for you to try and sprite/show off anything that would otherwise be done by the team’s spriter, @ilexdamenshi (he also is an amazing spriter go check him out). They already have content that they’re working on, and the team’s also getting paid to work on this. It’d come across as unfair and rather rude if you made something that’s already coming into the game, especially if you expect it to be in the game. Underfell is a cool AU, with a great game and an even greater set of sprites. Don’t ruin it for other people.
And that was the Underfell sprite tutorial! Any other details are basics that don’t really need much explaining. Hopefully this made sense, I’m not that good with giving instructions. 😛
It’s Meg for this weeks TUTOR TUESDAY! Today’s tutorial was recommended by Anon about rough sketching/blocking. They specifically mentioned standing poses, so I tried that, but I might extend this to full image/composition roughing later! Hope this helps a little! Feel free to send recommendations here or my personal! Keep practicing, have fun, and I’ll see you next week!
